2009 National Training
Aircraft Symposium

Daytona Beach Campus

Monday evening March 16 through Thursday March 20, 2009.

NTAS 2009 Focus:

  • Adding Value to Collegiate Training
  • Safety Management Systems Education
  • NextGen Airspace Education
  • Professional Development of Educator Participants

Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will host the National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS 2009) at our Daytona Beach campus beginning March 16 and running through March 19, 2009.

We are keenly aware of the current economic impact on institutional travel budgets. NTAS 2009 is structured to focus on near and mid term value for our educator colleagues, with emphasis on low cost training systems and airplanes, innovation through incorporation of new FTD features, and a breakthrough in hypoxia training.

NTAS will open with a reception on Monday evening. On Tuesday, we’ll have a full day of updates on equipment supporting collegiate aviation training operations, from airplanes to simulation devices to training management tools. We will challenge our LSA suppliers to present training systems that are a viable solution for collegiate training from a total cost of ownership perspective. We will feature important new developments in twin engine airplanes.

Wednesday and Thursday will feature in-depth explorations with expert panelists on two emergent topics: Safety Management Systems (SMS) and NextGen Performance-Based Operations. These are crucial subjects necessary to prepare graduates for a productive career in an industry that is adopting SMS by regulation and incorporating NextGen technologies to accommodate traffic growth. Our discussions will inform, share, and serve as excellent professional development experiences for collegiate participants. We are recruiting panelists to share their expertise and guidance, and will convene a "Super Panel" of collegiate institution members to describe their progress and share best practices addressing these topics in their academic and laboratory curricula.

When you attend NTAS 2009, you can participate in innovative demonstrations that can have a significant impact of a comprehensive collegiate flight-training program:

Virtual Air Traffic in simulation training:
Embry-Riddle is partnered with Frasca to develop interactive air traffic control communications scenarios embedded in simulation curricula. Our experience suggests enhancements to air traffic control interaction in simulation beyond what is possible with instructor emulation will allow better transfer of learning and lead to more effective training, better utilization of flight training devices, and shorter, more efficient programs.
Normobaric technologies:
a breakthrough atmospheric chemistry management methodology to demonstrate hypoxia and other altitude-related events without the use of a hyperbaric chamber.
Low Cost Training Aircraft:
for several years NTAS has explored the LSA market and asked manufacturers to speak to their utility, payload, instrument training applicability, durability, maintainability, and reliability in high-utilization collegiate training. These aircraft have now been around long enough for manufacturers to respond with credible system life cycle costs, a critical success factor for both institutions and their student customers.
